Your audience is mostly strangers.
On the channels we run, almost everyone watching has never followed the account that made the video. That changes what a following is for.
For creators, public figures, PR firms
For most of the last decade, a following was a distribution list. You posted, the people who had chosen you saw it, and the follower count told you roughly how many would.
That arrangement has quietly ended. An Instagram post from a brand now reaches about 3.2%1 of the account's followers. On Facebook, the figure is 1.25%2. The people who chose you are, for the most part, not the people who see you.
The viewing has gone somewhere else: to recommendations. Meta reports that more than a third3 of what people in the United States see in their Facebook feed now comes from sources they have no connection to.
On short video, the shift is complete
Across the channels we run, 99.8% of the viewing came from people who did not follow the channel they were watching. Not most. Almost all.
Every video meets a new audience. The follower count describes who chose you once, not who will see you tomorrow.
This is not a story about followers losing value. It is a story about where reach now comes from. Each video is shown to people who have never heard of you, and it either holds them or it does not. On our channels, viewers stay for nearly two-thirds of each video on average. That, not the size of a list, is what earns the next audience.

- 3.2%1

- 64%

What it changes
- For creators, one account is not a ceiling of followers. It is a ceiling of chances: one daily shot at a stranger's attention. More channels in the same subject mean more of those chances, every day.
- For public figures, the picture people form of you is drawn by a stranger's feed, not by what your followers already know.
- For PR firms, a story that reaches only the client's existing audience has reached the converted. The new audience is in the feeds of people who have never followed anyone involved.
The useful question is no longer how many people follow you. It is how many strangers stay when you appear.
